The Federal Government has announced plans to expand access to cooking gas to 10 million Nigerian households as part of efforts to promote cleaner cooking and reduce dependence on traditional cooking fuels.

The initiative is aimed at increasing the adoption of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) across the country, particularly among low-income households that still rely heavily on firewood, charcoal and other polluting fuels.
The government said the programme is expected to contribute to improved public health, environmental protection and reduced pressure on Nigeria’s forests.
Officials said expanding access to LPG remains an important component of the Federal Government’s broader energy transition agenda, as the country seeks to provide Nigerians with safer, cleaner and more efficient cooking alternatives.
The programme is also expected to support the development of Nigeria’s domestic LPG market while creating opportunities for businesses operating across the cooking gas value chain.

The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to address challenges affecting the affordability, availability and distribution of cooking gas, particularly in underserved communities.
The initiative is expected to reach millions of households as the government intensifies efforts to promote clean cooking and reduce the health and environmental consequences associated with the use of traditional fuels.
