The defending champions produced a spirited display at the Al Medina Stadium, holding off sustained pressure from the Copper Queens after being reduced to 10 players for more than 50 minutes following a first-half red card.
The hard-fought win marked Nigeria’s first three points of the tournament, bouncing back from their opening defeat to Malawi and boosting their chances of securing a place in the knockout stage.
Veteran forward Asisat Oshoala scored the decisive goal in the eighth minute. The six-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year capitalised on a defensive error, raced past two Zambian defenders, and saw her initial effort saved by goalkeeper Hazel Nali before the rebound deflected off her right leg into the net.
The victory keeps the Super Falcons’ title defence on track as they look to build momentum in the remaining group-stage fixtures.
