The World Bank has set a target of providing electricity access to about 32 million Nigerians by 2032 as part of efforts to address the country’s persistent power supply challenges.

The initiative is expected to support Nigeria’s broader efforts to expand electricity access, improve reliability and strengthen the power sector, particularly for underserved and unserved communities.

The World Bank has continued to support Nigeria’s electricity sector through financing and technical assistance aimed at increasing access to reliable power, expanding distribution infrastructure and promoting renewable energy solutions.

The target comes amid the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to improve electricity access across the country and reduce the number of Nigerians who remain without dependable electricity.

Nigeria has one of the world’s largest populations without access to electricity, while millions of people who are connected to the national grid also experience irregular supply.

The World Bank’s planned intervention is expected to focus on expanding electricity connections and supporting investments capable of reaching communities and households that have historically been left out of formal electricity networks.

The programme is also expected to complement Nigeria’s efforts to develop distributed energy solutions, including mini-grids and other off-grid systems, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas.

Access to reliable electricity is regarded as critical to Nigeria’s economic development, with inadequate power supply affecting businesses, industries, healthcare facilities, schools and households.

The expansion of electricity access is therefore expected to improve economic opportunities, support small and medium-sized enterprises and enhance living standards for millions of Nigerians.

The World Bank’s 2032 target also aligns with broader national and international efforts to achieve universal electricity access and promote more sustainable energy systems.
