Nigeria’s Super Falcons produced a stunning attacking display on Wednesday night, thrashing Egypt 6-2 to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco. The emphatic victory ensured the nine-time African champions progressed from Group C after a difficult start to their campaign.

Heading into the decisive group-stage encounter, the Falcons knew only a victory would guarantee qualification after suffering a shock opening defeat to Malawi before bouncing back with a narrow win over Zambia. They responded in style, overwhelming the Egyptians with relentless attacking football and clinical finishing.

Nigeria took control of the contest early, creating numerous scoring opportunities and racing into the lead. Although Egypt managed to pull a goal back before the break to keep their hopes alive, the Super Falcons remained dominant throughout the encounter, displaying their experience and attacking quality in the second half.

The Falcons added four more goals after the restart to complete a comprehensive 6-2 victory, with several players getting on the scoresheet in one of Nigeria’s most impressive performances of the tournament. The eight-goal thriller also featured three penalties as the West Africans proved too strong for the Pharaohs.

The result sealed Nigeria’s passage to the last eight of the competition, where the Super Falcons are set to face old rivals Cameroon in a highly anticipated quarter-final clash. The convincing win has also boosted confidence within the squad as they continue their quest for another continental title.

Reacting after the match, members of the Nigerian team expressed delight with the performance, describing the victory as a strong response to the criticism that followed their opening defeat. They vowed to maintain the momentum in the knockout stage, insisting their focus remains on reclaiming the WAFCON crown.

With the victory, the Super Falcons reaffirmed their status as one of Africa’s most successful women’s football teams, sending a strong message to the remaining contenders as the tournament enters its decisive knockout phase.
