Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has called for a justice system that places people at the centre, stressing the need for reforms that make justice more accessible, efficient and responsive to the needs of citizens.

Osinbajo made the call while speaking at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Conference, where he highlighted the importance of strengthening Nigeria’s justice system and ensuring that the rule of law serves the interests of the people.

He noted that justice should not be viewed merely as a technical or institutional process but as a system whose effectiveness is ultimately measured by its impact on ordinary citizens.

The former Vice President emphasised the need to address challenges that prevent Nigerians from obtaining justice promptly, including delays in the judicial process, high costs and difficulties accessing legal services.

According to him, a people-centred justice system requires institutions that are responsive, transparent and capable of delivering timely outcomes.

Osinbajo also stressed the important role of lawyers and other stakeholders in strengthening the rule of law and ensuring that citizens’ rights are protected.

He urged members of the legal profession to continue contributing to reforms capable of improving the administration of justice and restoring public confidence in the legal system.

The former Vice President’s remarks came as legal practitioners, policymakers and other stakeholders gathered at the NBA Conference to discuss issues affecting Nigeria’s justice sector and the broader development of the country.

He maintained that meaningful justice-sector reform must go beyond policy statements and translate into practical improvements in the experiences of citizens seeking justice.

The conference provided an avenue for stakeholders in the legal profession to examine contemporary challenges facing the judiciary and explore ways of building a more effective and accessible justice system in Nigeria.
