President Bola Tinubu has directed state governments to ensure that Nigerians begin to experience measurable reductions in transportation fares from October 1, 2026, through the expansion of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and other cheaper energy-powered transport options.
Tinubu disclosed this in a statement on Saturday while giving an update on the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme, which was established following his August 27 meeting with the 36 state governors.
According to the President, an implementation committee has been set up under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to coordinate the programme and ensure that savings from cheaper energy are passed on to commuters.
He urged states to work with transport unions and commercial operators, support vehicle conversion and fleet deployment, and provide the infrastructure required to expand CNG-powered transportation.
Tinubu said several states were already recording significant reductions in transport fares through CNG and electric-powered buses.
In Oyo State, for instance, he said CNG buses deployed to Pacesetter Transport reduced the Lagos-Ibadan fare from about ₦8,000 to ₦3,200 during the initial deployment.
He also cited Borno, where CNG and electric public transport services reportedly charge between ₦50 and ₦100 on routes where commercial operators charge between ₦300 and ₦600.
In Abuja, the President said CNG-converted commercial vehicles had delivered fare reductions of about 40 per cent on some routes, including Area 1-Gwagwalada, Nyanya, and Wuse.
Tinubu said the Federal Government would continue supporting the expansion of CNG infrastructure and vehicle-conversion capacity.
He stressed that the objective was to ensure that the savings from cheaper energy ultimately reach Nigerians through lower transportation fares.
