Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed has reportedly won Michigan’s US Senate race, potentially making history as the first Muslim to serve in the United States Senate.

El-Sayed defeated Republican candidate Mike Rogers in the closely watched contest to fill the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters.
A former public health official and 2018 Michigan gubernatorial candidate, El-Sayed secured the Democratic nomination in August before facing Rogers in the November 3 midterm elections.
His reported victory marks a historic milestone for Muslim representation in American politics, as no Muslim has previously served in the US Senate.
However, the Associated Press has described the race as closely contested, with the final outcome still requiring confirmation.
If officially confirmed, El-Sayed’s victory would open a new chapter in the history of religious representation in the United States Senate.
