Prof. Christopher Imumolen, the 2027 presidential candidate of a faction of the Accord Party, has announced his withdrawal from the presidential race and declared his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for a second term in office.
Imumolen said his decision followed consultations with political associates and stakeholders, stressing that national interest and the need for continuity in governance informed his endorsement of President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to him, backing the incumbent president is aimed at promoting political stability and sustaining ongoing economic and governance reforms initiated by the Tinubu administration.
The development marks a significant shift in the 2027 political landscape, as Imumolen had only recently emerged as the presidential candidate of an Accord Party faction through a consensus process. His withdrawal effectively removes him from the list of contenders seeking the nation’s highest office.
However, the endorsement comes against the backdrop of a lingering leadership dispute within the Accord Party. The party’s national leadership, under National Chairman Maxwell Mgbudem, has previously distanced itself from Imumolen, maintaining that the party had neither endorsed any presidential candidate nor recognized his emergence. The leadership also stated that Imumolen had been expelled from the party in 2024, a claim his faction has consistently rejected.
The latest move is expected to generate fresh political debate as parties continue realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with observers closely monitoring its potential impact on the evolving electoral landscape.
