The Wife of the Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, has reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to eliminating sexual harassment in tertiary institutions across the state, warning that perpetrators will face the full weight of the law.
Dr. Oyebanji made the declaration during a stakeholders’ engagement on safeguarding students in higher institutions, where she stressed the need to create a safe and conducive learning environment free from abuse, intimidation and exploitation. She said the fight against sexual harassment requires the collective efforts of government, school authorities, students, parents and civil society organizations.
According to the First Lady, no student should be subjected to any form of sexual exploitation in exchange for academic or other benefits, adding that the state government would continue to strengthen policies and support mechanisms that protect victims while ensuring offenders are held accountable.
She emphasized that institutions must enforce zero-tolerance policies against sexual harassment, encourage victims to report incidents without fear of victimization, and establish effective channels for handling complaints promptly and transparently.
Dr. Oyebanji also urged students to speak up against all forms of abuse, assuring them of the government’s support and protection. She noted that safeguarding the dignity, rights and welfare of students remains a priority of the Biodun Oyebanji administration, particularly in promoting quality education and gender equality.
She further called on tertiary institutions to intensify awareness campaigns on sexual harassment and strengthen disciplinary measures to preserve the integrity of the state’s higher education system.
