Opposition parties have criticised former Zamfara State Governor and APC chieftain, Abdul’aziz Yari, over his declaration that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would remain in power beyond 2031.
Yari had reportedly expressed confidence that the ruling party would continue to dominate Nigeria’s political landscape beyond the 2027 general elections and retain power after 2031.
His statement has, however, drawn sharp reactions from opposition figures, who described the claim as presumptuous and an indication of the APC’s alleged desire to remain in power indefinitely.
The opposition argued that political power ultimately belongs to Nigerians and that no political party can determine its continued stay in government without the electorate’s consent.
They urged Nigerians to reject what they described as attempts to take the country’s democratic process for granted, insisting that the 2027 elections would provide an opportunity for voters to decide the direction of the country.
The opposition parties maintained that the APC’s continued rule would depend on its performance and the verdict of Nigerians at the polls, rather than declarations by its leaders.
