The Federal Government has commenced the demolition of the iconic Carter Bridge in Lagos as part of plans to replace the aging structure with a modern bridge estimated at N548.98 billion.

The project is aimed at improving transportation infrastructure, easing traffic congestion and strengthening connectivity within Lagos, one of Nigeria’s busiest commercial centres.

The replacement project is expected to provide a more durable and efficient transportation link while addressing concerns over the structural condition and age of the existing bridge.

Government officials said the massive investment reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to renewing critical infrastructure and improving road connectivity across the country.

The Carter Bridge has served as an important transportation link in Lagos for decades, connecting areas around Lagos Island and the mainland.

Its replacement is therefore expected to have significant implications for commuters, businesses and residents who depend on the route for daily movement.

Authorities are expected to put traffic management measures in place to minimise disruption during the demolition and construction phases.

The N548.98 billion replacement project forms part of the Federal Government’s broader infrastructure development programme, with emphasis on rehabilitating and replacing critical roads and bridges that have become inadequate due to age, heavy usage and increasing population.

The government has assured that the project will ultimately provide a safer and more efficient transport corridor for Lagos residents and other road users.
