Police operatives have arrested one Adewale Ogoemi Arojah for allegedly impersonating a popular prophet on Facebook and defrauding several victims of more than ₦18 million in Ajegunle, along the Ilaro/Ibogun axis of Ogun State.

The suspect was arrested by operatives of the Ilaro Division following a complaint filed by Akogun on October 3, 2026.
The spokesperson for Ogun Police Command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said in a statement on Thursday that Arojah allegedly cloned the Facebook identity of one Prophet Dr. Muyiwa Akogun and used the platform to lure unsuspecting members of the public with promises of prayers, prophecies, and spiritual assistance.
According to the police, the cleric had alerted authorities after receiving complaints from members of the public about fraudulent activities being carried out through a duplicated Facebook account bearing his identity.
Acting on the complaint, the Divisional Police Officer, Ilaro, reportedly deployed intelligence and detective operatives to track the suspect, who was described as the son of a prophet.
The suspect was traced to a village in Ajegunle, along the Ilaro/Ibogun axis, where he was arrested.
Babaseyi said during interrogation, Arojah confessed to impersonating Akogun on Facebook.
He allegedly admitted using the cleric’s identity to issue fake prophecies and offer prayer services to people seeking spiritual help.
Babaseyi said that preliminary investigations further showed that the suspect targeted people seeking spiritual assistance through the genuine prophet’s Facebook platform, gained their confidence, and subsequently collected money from them.
He put the total amount allegedly obtained from the victims at over ₦18 million.
Babaseyi said the suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.
According to the Ogun police spokesperson, the investigation would determine the full extent of the alleged fraud, establish whether other people were involved, and prepare the case for possible prosecution.
The spokesperson quoted Ogun Commissioner of Police CP Bode Ojajuni as commending the Ilaro operatives for their vigilance, tactical discipline, and swift response.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to tackling cybercrime, identity theft, and other forms of criminal activity in the state.
The police also urged members of the public to be wary of fraudulent social media accounts allegedly belonging to religious leaders and other public figures.
The Command also advised citizens to verify the authenticity of social media accounts before engaging with them or transferring money for prayers, spiritual remedies, or other services.
