The Osun State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the attack on police officers at Ikire, Osun State, which resulted in the death of two civilians and left three police officers injured.
The Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, CP Ibrahim Umar Zungura, disclosed this on Thursday, August 27, 2026, during a press briefing in the state.
The incident occurred on Monday, August 24, when the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Ikire, and his men responded to a distress call at the Naira & Kobo area of the town.
According to the Commissioner, the police team was confronted by about 30 armed hoodlums who reportedly attacked the officers and forcefully snatched an AK-47 rifle from one of the policemen.
Zungura said one of the hoodlums, identified as Ayewo, allegedly opened fire sporadically with the stolen rifle, hitting three police officers and two passers-by.
The two civilians later died from the injuries sustained, while the injured police officers were rushed to a hospital for medical treatment. The hoodlums subsequently fled the scene with the stolen police rifle.
The Commissioner said the Command launched an investigation following the incident and, through credible intelligence and technical analysis, its operatives arrested four suspects on Wednesday, August 26.
The arrested suspects were identified as 21-year-old Sikiru Ademola Adedeji; 21-year-old Olalere Taiwo; 26-year-old Olalere Ademola; and 20-year-old Bankole Abiodun.
One cutlass-like object was also recovered from the suspects.
The suspects, according to the Commissioner, confessed during preliminary interrogation that they were political thugs and belonged to a faction allegedly headed by Ayewo, whose other name remains unknown.
Zungura said the suspects further identified Ayewo as the person who allegedly fired the stolen AK-47 rifle during the attack.
He added that investigation was ongoing to apprehend Ayewo and other suspects still at large.
The Commissioner commended the police operatives involved in the investigation for their professionalism, dedication and effective use of intelligence and technical capabilities in tracking down the suspects.
He assured residents that the investigation would continue until all those involved in the incident were identified and arrested.
“Every individual found to have participated in or contributed to the commission of the offence will be made to face the full weight of the law,” the Commissioner said.
Zungura also appealed to members of the public to continue providing the police with credible and timely information capable of assisting in crime prevention and the arrest of criminal elements.
He reaffirmed the Osun State Police Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property while maintaining peace and security across the state.
