A former Los Angeles gang leader has been found guilty of the murder of American rap legend Tupac Shakur, bringing a major development to a case that has remained one of the most talked-about unsolved killings in music history.

Shakur, widely known as 2Pac, was shot several times on September 7, 1996, while riding in a BMW with then-Death Row Records chief Marion “Suge” Knight in Las Vegas, Nevada. He died six days later, on September 13, 1996, at the age of 25.

The rapper had been in Las Vegas to attend a Mike Tyson boxing match at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

According to prosecutors, the shooting followed an altercation at the MGM Grand involving Shakur and members of a rival gang. Investigators said the confrontation later contributed to the fatal drive-by shooting.

The former gang leader, Duane “Keffe D” Davis, was arrested in September 2023 after authorities searched his home in connection with the investigation.

Davis had previously acknowledged being in the vehicle from which the shots were fired, but maintained that he was not the gunman.

The prosecution’s case centred on statements Davis had made over the years about his alleged involvement and his knowledge of the events surrounding Shakur’s killing.

The murder of Tupac Shakur had remained officially unsolved for more than two decades, despite numerous theories and investigations.

Shakur was one of the most influential figures in hip-hop and had achieved worldwide fame through albums including All Eyez on Me and Me Against the World. His music frequently addressed poverty, violence, racism, social inequality and life in disadvantaged communities.

His death at the height of his career shocked the music industry and triggered widespread speculation over who was responsible.

The case also became intertwined with the wider rivalry between the East Coast and West Coast hip-hop scenes of the 1990s. Shakur was one of the leading figures associated with the West Coast movement, while his highly publicised feud with fellow rapper The Notorious B.I.G. intensified tensions within the genre.

The killing of Shakur was followed by another major tragedy six months later when The Notorious B.I.G., whose real name was Christopher Wallace, was fatally shot in Los Angeles in March 1997.

For years, investigators struggled to obtain sufficient evidence to prosecute anyone for Shakur’s death. Davis’s public comments eventually became a significant part of the investigation, helping authorities revisit the case.

The guilty verdict represents a significant moment in the decades-long effort to establish accountability for the rapper’s death.

Tupac Shakur remains one of the best-selling and most influential hip-hop artists of all time. More than three decades after his rise to fame, his music continues to attract millions of listeners worldwide, while his legacy has extended into film, poetry, activism and popular culture.

His murder had remained a defining mystery in hip-hop history until the latest court development.
