The Nigeria Police Force has arrested 295 suspects during the Osun State governorship election as part of efforts to prevent electoral violence, vote-buying and other election-related offences.

According to the police, 293 of the suspects were released on bail following screening, while two remain in custody for further investigation and possible prosecution over alleged electoral offences.

The arrests came amid repeated warnings by security agencies that individuals found attempting to disrupt the electoral process or violate electoral laws would be apprehended and prosecuted.

Security agencies had deployed personnel across the state ahead of and during the election to maintain law and order, protect voters and electoral officials, and safeguard election materials.

Despite the arrests recorded by the police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) said it did not arrest any suspect during the election.

The NSCDC attributed the peaceful conduct of the poll to its extensive deployment across Osun State and the effectiveness of its security measures.

The police said investigations into the cases involving the two suspects still in custody would continue, with prosecution to follow where sufficient evidence of electoral offences is established.
