Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns over what he described as a suspicious and unauthorised credit transaction into one of his private bank accounts.
Atiku’s concern was contained in a statement issued on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu. According to the statement, the former vice president received a payment from an individual whose identity was unknown to him.
The transaction reportedly carried the narration, “Contribution Electioneering Campaign,” despite the fact that Atiku and his campaign organisation did not solicit or authorise the payment.
The statement stressed that neither Atiku nor members of his campaign team had any knowledge of the person or entity responsible for the transfer.
“Neither His Excellency nor his campaign solicited, authorised or has any knowledge of the individual or entity behind the unauthorised payment,” the statement said.
Atiku’s camp expressed particular concern because the affected account is described as a strictly private account, with details that are not publicly available. The incident therefore raised questions about how an unknown individual could have obtained the account information necessary to make the payment.
According to the statement, the development may point to a possible compromise of the former vice president’s confidential banking information. Atiku’s camp said the matter should not be viewed merely as an unexplained financial transaction, but also as a potential security and privacy concern.
The former vice president further questioned how the details of a private bank account belonging to a former vice president and presidential candidate could have been obtained by an unknown person.
His camp consequently called attention to the wider implications of the incident, arguing that if confidential banking information belonging to a prominent political figure could allegedly be accessed without authorisation, similar concerns could arise for ordinary citizens.
The development comes as political activities intensify ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with Atiku emerging as the ADC’s presidential candidate.
The reports did not identify the individual or organisation behind the payment, nor did they disclose the amount involved. Atiku’s camp has also not publicly established how the sender obtained the account details.
The incident has therefore prompted questions about banking confidentiality, data protection and the security of financial information as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections continue to gather momentum.
