President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, granting pay increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent as part of efforts to improve the welfare and morale of military officers and soldiers.
The development was announced on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who disclosed that about 250,000 personnel across the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force are expected to benefit from the new salary package.
According to the Presidency, the new remuneration structure will take effect from September 1, 2026, with officers above the rank of Colonel receiving a 30 per cent salary increase.
The category includes Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant-Generals and Generals, while personnel in lower ranks are expected to receive higher increments, with some enjoying salary increases of up to 80 per cent under the reviewed structure.
The salary review forms part of the Tinubu administration’s ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening the country’s security architecture, improving the welfare of security personnel, and boosting operational efficiency in the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats.
The Federal Government has repeatedly stated that improving the welfare of military personnel remains a priority, alongside investments in modern equipment, intelligence gathering and enhanced operational capacity to tackle insecurity across the country.
The latest approval is expected to provide significant financial relief to members of the Armed Forces and further boost morale among troops engaged in various internal security operations and external peacekeeping missions.
