Nigerian borders already open, Presidency replies Atiku

The Presidency has responded to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s call for the reopening of Nigeria’s land borders, saying the country’s borders are already open.

The clarification followed comments by Atiku in which he urged the Federal Government to reopen the nation’s land borders, arguing that doing so would boost economic activities and strengthen trade with neighbouring countries.

Reacting to the former vice president’s position, the Presidency said the call was based on a misunderstanding of the current situation, stressing that Nigeria’s land borders are not under a blanket closure.

The government maintained that border operations have continued, with relevant agencies carrying out their statutory responsibilities, including the regulation of cross-border movement and the prevention of smuggling and other illegal activities.

The Presidency’s position comes amid renewed discussions over Nigeria’s trade policies, border management and efforts to stimulate economic growth.

It also reflects the Federal Government’s broader emphasis on improving regional trade while maintaining security and protecting the Nigerian economy from illicit cross-border activities.
