The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) have reportedly summoned officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over the alleged mismanagement of about N12 billion in Federal Government funds.

The development comes amid growing scrutiny of the finances of the country’s football governing body and the management of funds allocated to it by the Federal Government.

The funds under investigation are reportedly part of government releases meant to support football development and related activities.

Officials of the NFF are expected to appear before the anti-graft agencies to provide explanations and relevant documents concerning the disbursement and utilisation of the funds.

The investigation is expected to examine how the funds were released, the purposes for which they were approved and whether the money was utilised in accordance with government guidelines.

The EFCC and ICPC are both empowered to investigate financial crimes, corruption and related offences involving public funds.

The summons form part of efforts by the agencies to establish whether any financial irregularities, diversion or improper use of public resources occurred in connection with the N12 billion allocation.

The development is also expected to place further attention on the financial administration of the NFF, which is responsible for overseeing football activities and national teams in Nigeria.

The NFF has yet to be found guilty of any wrongdoing in connection with the investigation, and the summons should not be interpreted as an indication of guilt. The officials are expected to provide their explanations and documents to assist the agencies in their investigations.

The investigation comes as Nigerian authorities continue to intensify scrutiny of the management of public funds across government institutions and agencies.
