The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s absence at the signing of the 2027 general election peace accord.

Adebayo said the President’s absence at the event sent the wrong signal, particularly at a time when political parties and candidates are being urged to commit themselves to peaceful and issue-based campaigns ahead of the elections.

Speaking on the development, the SDP presidential candidate stressed the importance of political leaders demonstrating commitment to the principles contained in the peace accord.

He said the presence of major political actors at such an event would help strengthen public confidence in the electoral process and reinforce the commitment to peaceful elections.

The peace accord was signed by several political parties and presidential contenders as part of efforts to promote peaceful campaigns, discourage violence and ensure that political disputes are resolved through lawful means.

Adebayo urged political leaders and their supporters to prioritise national unity and allow Nigerians to make their choices freely during the 2027 elections.
